Slate Roofing

Slate roofs especially in South Africa are viewed as an upmarket prduct. This is due the prestigious and sophistocated look that they give to a home. There are two ways in which a slate roof can installed.

1.  Conventional : On a conventional slate roof the slate acts as the waterproofing and the underlay is not required. This is achieved by sourcing large pieces of slate and overlapping them in order to create a water tight surface. This system was introduced when slate first started being used as a covering for roofs, however due to over-quarrying over the last 30years it has become increasingly difficult to source the size slates required to achieve this. It is due to this that the "Top Nail" system was introduced. 
2. Top Nail : A Top Nail slate roof essentially consists of two products. The first product is called Slatex, this is a bitchum malthoid that is bonded with aluminium to protect the bitchem from the sun. This product has great insulation values and also acts as the waterproofing. We import our own brand of Slatex which we call A Grade Slatex, our A Grade Slatex is fully bonded with aluminium, meaning that the bitchem is fully covered by aluminium leaving nothing exposed to the suns harmful UV rays. Most local contracters supply a Half Bonded slatex, where only 40% of the slatex is coated in aluminium. The fact that our A Grade Slatex is fully bonded gives the roof a much longer life span. In the " Top Nail " application the slate is essentially only there for the aesthetic as the Slatex provides the waterproofing. However the slate must still be sorted and installed correctly to a avieve a beautiful visage.

Top Nail is the most common system being used at the moment as not only is it becoming increasingly difficult to source the larger slates but thesl Slatex membrane which is fitted below the slate provides a much longer life span.
